POETRY IN THE SCRIPTURES- part 2

In a previous blog, Poetry in the Scriptures, we looked at some beautiful features of Hebrew poetry presented to us by Lawrence O. Richards in his ILLUSTRATED BIBLE HANDBOOK. Here are some more notes from the INTERNATIONAL STANDARD BIBLE ENCYCLOPEDIA about this beautiful parallel style of writing. This entry can be found under the heading, Poetry, Hebrew, Parallelism.  It is written by Thomas Wiitton Davies and edited by this author.

Introverted, or reverse, parallelism as in AB-BA; Proverbs 23:15-16 KJV.

(a) My son, if thine heart be wise,

(b} my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

(b) Yea, my reins shall rejoice,

(a) when thy lips speak right things.

Palilogical, or echo, parallelism is where one or more words are repeated as an echo; Psalm 150:1 KJV.

Praise ye the LORD.

Praise God in his sanctuary:

praise him in the firmament of his power.

Climactic, or comprehensive, parallelism is found when the second line completes the thought of the first line; Psalm 29:1 KJV.

Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty,

give unto the LORD glory and strength.

Rhythmic, or repetitive, parallelism can be found when a phrase is repeated, as in Psalm 107 and 136; KJV.

Psalm 107:1, 8, 15, 21, 31 KJV – O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. …

Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! …

Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! …

Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men! …

Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Psalm 136

O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

O give thanks unto the God of gods:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

O give thanks to the Lord of lords:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him who alone doeth great wonders:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that by wisdom made the heavens:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that stretched out the earth above the waters:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that made great lights:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

The sun to rule by day:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

The moon and stars to rule by night:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

And brought out Israel from among them:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

With a strong hand, and with a stretched out arm:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him which divided the Red sea into parts:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

And made Israel to pass through the midst of it:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

But overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him which led his people through the wilderness:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

To him which smote great kings:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

And slew famous kings:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

Sihon king of the Amorites:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

And Og the king of Bashan:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

And gave their land for an heritage:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

Even an heritage unto Israel his servant:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who remembered us in our low estate:

for his mercy endureth for ever:

And hath redeemed us from our enemies:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

Who giveth food to all flesh:

for his mercy endureth for ever.

O GIVE THANKS UNTO THE GOD OF HEAVEN:

FOR HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOR EVER.

We are born again by the word of God!

1 Peter 1:22-25 KJV – Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.

God bless you all.
